Project Learning Tree - PLT
In 1994 the American Forest Foundation created PLT--Project Learning Tree--which in Portuguese means Projeto Aprendendo com a Arvore. The project spread to Canada, Finland, Mexico, Sweden, Japan, Brazil and other countries. The Rigesa units in Tręs Barras, SC, were the first to implement PLT in Brazil.
In spite of its name, PLT project does not only teach about trees. The teaching is wide ranging and detailed on all environmental questions including air, water, soil, vegetation and animals and their interactions. In this aspect the themes explored are extremely similar to the content in school courses today. PLT's primary objective is to show that it is possible to combine social and economic development with respect for and protection of nature.
Rigesa has trained more than 1,100 teachers, and PLT is in more than 170 schools, reaching approximately 45,000 students.
As a result of this and other programs, Rigesa stays up to date, participating and collaborating in the continual improvement of the quality of life in the region.
