The award ceremony took place on May 20, 2008 in the city of Curitiba, State of Paraná (Brazil), and Rigesa was represented by Antonio Tsunoda, the Communications Manager at Tres Barras. The Mérito Exportação Award was created to highlight the economic importance of wood-related segments and to value organizations and businessmen that search for new opportunities in foreign markets. The criterion to select the winners is export revenues in descending order in 2007, according to the list provided by the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (the MDIC). In 2008, the 100 top exporters in the sector were selected for the ceremony, divided into product areas. Overall, the wood, furniture and paper & pulp segments exported USD 9.07 billion in 2007 versus USD 8.2 billion in 2006, a ten per cent growth year on year. The state of São Paulo is the largest exporter of forestry products in Brazil, followed by Paraná and Santa Catarina. The Southern states are standing out in specific sectors such as wood and furniture exports, in which they are the leaders.
